​李继凯教授受邀主编Journal of East-West Thought特辑“文化磨合视阈中的东西方文学”

Journal of East-West Thought(美国《东西方思想杂志》) 2023夏季刊日前出版。本特辑邀请人文科学高等研究院首席专家李继凯教授担任主编,以East-West Literature in the Perspective of Cultural Crossvergence(文化磨合视阈中的东西方文学为主题,共刊发8篇论文,2篇书评。

特辑:文化磨合视阈中的东西方文学

东西方文学/文艺其实都是这个小小寰球上的文学/文艺,无论文学/文艺之花多么缤纷美丽也都是来自人类的文化创造。但由于历史、地理、语言、文化、心理等方面的差异,东西方文学/文艺也有诸多不同。对这些实存的不同,我们既要进行比较分析,更要在超越二元对立的前提下,不断寻求其沟通、交流、互鉴、共享的可能性。而在我看来,这个文化对话、文化运演的过程其实也就是东西文化或异元文化之间的“文化磨合”过程。

文化磨合论,窃以为是东西方诸多文化学说中的一种,它看重和强调的是多元文化或异态文化之间的关联性、适配性、吻合性、调适性、互动性,既看重文化主体性以及差异性、矛盾性,更看重“主体间性”以及共同性、和合性。从文化磨合视域观照国际政治、人类命运、文化交流以及团队、家庭等,自然可以通过持续磨合来超越对立对抗、纷争战争带来的困局与苦难。一方面,文化磨合之说是理想的,旨归于“异而能和”、“磨而能合”的“和而不同”,从而逐步实现多元共存、共生共赢、互补互惠、分享永享的“共享主义”。但另一方面,文化磨合之说更是现实的,因为就在当下,人们或人类就实际处于各种各样的“磨合关系”中,通过实际且高效的磨合即可建构相互吻合、相互适配的各种“命运共同体”。同时在我看来,实现真正理想化的“整合”或“融合”其实是非常困难的乃至是虚妄的,因为在实践层面总有个以“谁”为主体进行整合与融合的问题,而这个“主体”或“本位”之争恰恰是许多族群、国家纷争不已的深层根源。但可行性很强的“磨合”却相对易于进行且实际普遍存在着。从个人的“适者生存”到家庭的“和睦幸福”,从国家的“和谐发展”到人类的“命运共同体建构”,凡此种种都非常需要磨合,其间也都实际存在一个不断磨合的过程和相对易于达成的磨合境界。

显然,在文艺/文化方面更需要磨合尤其是文化磨合,更要讲求多元多样、百花齐放,更要实行包容兼容、有容乃大。因为文化发展包括文艺发展,更不是简单地选择东方或西方、推行“清一色”及“弃旧图新”的问题,亦即不是要不断消灭某些文化/文艺以求“我花开后百花杀”的问题,而是要持续促成命运关联并建构命运共同体前提下的文化/文艺和谐发展问题。正是基于上述对“文化磨合”的体认,我们邀约几位学者着力从“文化磨合”视阈对东西方文学中的若干现象和文本进行了深究细研。虽然不能面面俱到,却也各有妙道及精彩之处,每一位作者都提供了自己对所关注的文学现象与文本的精到见解。欲知其详,阅览其文即可。

 Cultural Crossvergence and Modern Chinese Literature

Abstract  From the late Qing Dynasty and the early years of the Republic of China, the cultural crossvergence between Chinese and Western culture has begun. It is a complicated process which is full of painful and pleasant experiences, often both occurring at the same time. It has also formed a“cultural crossvergence” trend in both cultural thought and practice, and this trend is ubiquitous, long-lasting and inevitably complicated. Furthermore, it has an important effect on China’s literary phenomena. Since the beginning of the 20th century, with the development of this cultural crossvergence trend, it has formed a new type of modern culture with much more compatibility and diversity, thus creating a new phenomenon of literature. However, at the same time, there are also cultural collisions between east and west, and some people try to resist the “cultural crossvergence” trend. This thought has not only jeopardized the creation of modern culture but also negatively affected new century Chinese literature.

Chinese Realism: From Importation and Integration to Independent Development

Abstract  In China, the creation method of Realism in the modern sense has gone through a long process, from the introduction to independent development, from xieshizhuyi, xinxieshizhuyi, Realism, Socialist Realism, and finally to the combination of revolutionary Realism, and romanticism. In the early stage of development, the basic theories and main concepts of Chinese realist creation methods were introduced from abroad and adopted by the Chinese literary society after being refined and improved. Regarding the "Two Combinations" creative method, it is the first national realist creative method proposed by the Chinese, based on their social reality. Later, the Chinese realist creation method entered the path of independent development.

Juvenile Literature in the Light of Cultural Exchange and Mutual Learning Between China and the West

Abstract  Juvenile Literature, namely, children’s literature, is in the real sense world literature because it is a kind of literary writing based on childlike innocence and genuine “common language.” Therefore, children’s literature is of a global vision, and meanwhile, it is also based on different national cultures, so it is both contemporary and national, artistic and childlike. The significance of children’s literature as world literature is evident. It highlights the exchanges between Chinese children’s literature and foreign children’s literature in the early 21st century to strengthen the theoretical exchange between Chinese children’s literature and foreign children’s literature and to introduce foreign academic resources of children’s literature. Today, China has become a veritably great country for children’s books publishing and children’s literature and is playing an increasingly important role in developing children’s literature worldwide. In the process of cultural exchange and mutual learning between China and the West, it is undoubtedly of practical significance and cultural value to perceive and understand contemporary Chinese children’s literature.

Postcolonial, Intellectual and Identity: Three Aspects of Abdulrazak’s Novel

Abstract Tanzanian-British writer Abdulrazak Gurnah won the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature, attracting global attention to African English literature. Starting from his own immigrant experience and mobile life, Gurnah puts the novel's text under the post-colonial society, and his novels formed the Messianic time view and dispersed narrative style. Gurnah focuses on the living conditions of African people from the standpoint of intellectual writing, and he dares to expose the reality of Africa influenced by the discourse of “mainstream narrative”.Gurnah's novels focus on refugee identity and spiritual affiliation issues, with sympathy for African people oppressed by colonialism. Gurnah's literary creation not only has great literary value, but also has the practical significance of breaking the thinking set of post-colonial binary opposition and re-understanding Africa.

(Narrating) Time (s) East and West: An Interdisciplinary Comparative Approach to Wang Xiaobo’s Time Trilogy

Abstract: This article explores how the fictional work of a modern Chinese writer (Wang Xiaobo, 1952-1997), specifically some of the novellas and novels in his collection The Time Trilogy, can be interpreted as a literary meditation on the complex relationship between time and memory. The temporal dimension of Wang’s work is presented, discussed, and analyzed through a comparative reading of Western, Indian, and Chinese philosophical, religious, and literary traditions, both ancient and contemporary. It is shown that Wang’s writing problematizes some crucial aspects of Chinese history by juxtaposing private memories and institutionalized narratives. In addition, it is argued that his work, while reframing and adapting in parodic terms different notions of temporality, can be regarded as a sui generis appropriation of Heidegger’s distinction between “authentic time” (Zeitlichkeit) and inauthentic time (Geschichtilichkeit )."

Crossing the Verge of World Literature: Misinterpreting of Early Chinese BaoJuan (or Precious Scroll)

Abstract  European and American scholars have studied Chinese baojuan for nearly three hundred years. How it was started and in what form it came into the English world needs to be better researched. A translation of Chinese Baojuan story, The Precious Scroll of Incense Mountain, was found in the journal of Chinese Repository. After a close examination of its version and a word-for-word translation comparison of the Chinese and English versions, it was found that the misinterpretation of baojuan genre, intentionally or unintentionally, by its translator, Karl Gützlaff, may be the key reason for the genre not attracting much attention from scholars outside China in the 19th century. Later studies of baojuan by scholars both inside China and outside China from Europe and America helped baojuan cross the verge of world literature."

Cultural Crossvergence: Theory, Practice and Significance in Contemporary China

Abstract This article will examine cultural crossvergence in China by analyzing its lack of theory and practice of critical discourse and the need for more awareness of its historical context, current situation, future direction, and significance in Chinese culture. The lack of cultural crossvergence in contemporary China is underscored by the still popular Orientalism and Occidentalism in critical cultural circles and the vigorous advocates of the Tianxia system and Cosmopolitanism. However, as a critical discourse, both Orientalism and Occidentalism deconstruct more than construct regarding the inequalities existing in the cultural communication between the Orient and the West. As a theoretical construction, the Tianxia system and Cosmopolitanism find themselves in a quandary over how to deal with the relationship between universality, particularity, and relativity of culture, nation, and state. Based on the consideration of the current trends of Chinese culture, such as “go global” and the “development of China’s knowledge system,” both presently being promoted by the government, it is apparent that we need to recognize the significance of cultural crossvergence and not just cultural convergence or cultural divergence. It is essential to highlight the “crossvergence” rather than “substitution” in the theoretical conception of constructing the Chinese knowledge system. The fundamental significance of cultural crossvergence, not only in contemporary China but also in other countries in the world, should be recognized as a more tolerant attitude, both in culture and literature, as well as in other areas such as politics, is a desirable way to build bridges between self and other.

Wenxin Diaolong in the Historical Works of Chinese Literature in Modern Japan

Abstract: The acceptance and dissemination of Wenxin Diaolong overseas is an important proof of the international influence of Chinese culture. As early as the Tang Dynasty, Wenxin Diaolong had already spread eastward to Ja-pan. The long history of the dissemination of Wenxin Diaolong started with the History of Chinese Literature in Japan in 1897 when it was published in the Meiji period by Kojyou Sadakichi. Subsequently, there emerged some great scholars of the studies of Wenxin Diaolong, like Suzuki Torao and Toda Hiroshiakatuki. Modern Japanese scholars have studied Wenxin Diao-long in many ways, both macroscopically and at the micro level. In particu-lar, the characterization of the work’s genre and its historical status is an essential reference for Chinese scholars: Japanese scholars first identified Wenxin Diaolong as “Six Dynasties prose” and “critical literature” and lat-er praised it as “a masterpiece of the thinking of rhetoric,” and finally called it “the culmination of early Chinese literary criticism.”
